You must understand vast areas of lands here were taken up in the east and midwest, south and North. West of the Rockies was open territories, and land grants were given, but there were military forts that held races to stake your claim and all you had to do was get there first and place a pole in . Many were killed during these events. People came here by the thousands, England Ireland Germany Scotland China, France Sweden, etc., any place to live where they could grow their own food and not be taxed to death. Plus they could be their own boss, once again freedom. When the gold strike came it was total chaos, people came again by the thousands and once again they killed for that as well. San Francisco, all of California. Look up Donners Pass what a gruesome story about people getting trapped and died from the freezing cold. It was a dangerous venture all the way around. They all must have been very brave.

Manifest Destiny. It was widely believed in the 1850's that it was the destiny of the United States of America to spread our version of democracy across North America. This led to the expansion of the western terratories of what is now the Continental United States. This belief and the discovery of Gold in California led to the mass migration of Americans across the great plains. Additionally, the discovery of fertle soil in the great plains (once referred to as the great american desert) fueled settlements in what is now the midwestern states.
An analogy would be dominoes. One belief led to a discovery, which led to another, and that led to another, and pretty soon, you had a continental expansion and the new shape of the United States of America.

Between the gold rush and the railroad, (and the ability to push the Native Americans about) the country really exploded from 1865 to 1890

In terms of acquiring land, we got it in chunks. First Louisisana in 1803, then territory ceded by Mexico in the 1850's (not sure of the year). Population didn't move west very rapidly except with the Gold Rush and the Oregon trail, which pushed people to the West Coast. It was only with the railroa boom of the 60's and 70's out to the west that it became fairly safe to make the journey out west. Before it was very, very dangerous. That's when really significant population of the West started.
