In the United States and Canada, there is a Groundhog Day celebration that gives the groundhog some added popularity.
The name woodchuck has nothing etymologically to do with wood. It stems from an Algonquian name for the animal (possibly Narragansett), wuchak. The apparent relationship between the two words has led to the common tongue twister: "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? —
A woodchuck would chuck no amount of wood since a woodchuck can't chuck wood
or
He would chuck what a woodchuck would if a woodchuck could chuck wood.
or
As much wood as a woodchuck would if a woodchuck could chuck wood.
or
A woodchuck would chuck all the wood he could chuck if a woodchuck really could chuck wood.

Well, first he'd have to have his morning coffee. After that, he may want to catch up on his e-mail, maybe even IM a couple of friends and his brother. When he was done with that, he might chuck two pieces of wood beofre he realized it was lunchtime. After lunch, he'd need to stop by Starbuck's for the pumpkin latte. Chuck 2 or 3 more pieces before he checks his e-mail again, but now the coffee's running through him and it's bathrrom time. To make a long story short, he'd only chuck 5-7 pieces of wood. Hope this helps!
