My little one is 3 months old and starting the first cold. she is congested and every time she lays on her back she starts to cough and choke on the mucous that is in her throat. The only time she doesn't do it is if she is on her stomach. I am afraid of sids seeing how they say sleeping on their backs is best but i have to let her sleep on stomach, is this safe, will she be okay?

Do what ever is more comfortable for your baby. I lost my 5 month old to SIDS and she was on her back. Anyway a baby that dies on their tummy face down is not considered SIDS that is suffocation. Years ago it was considered SIDS but not anymore it considered death by asphyxiation. If a baby dies on its tummy and it was not face down then it is SIDS but it has nothing to do with the positioning. That baby would have died in any position as my daughter did. Positioning has nothing to do with why these babies all of a sudden stop breathing. I'm in a SIDS group and I can tell you that more babies according to the mothers in that group died on their backs, sides, in car seats, being held, etc than on tummies. I've ton a lot of research since my baby died because when that happens that is the only way you get piece of mind. A lot of things have changed and some of the information you now see on the internet (as I've seen some people post and then tell me I'm wrong) is outdated and a lot of things have changed. Below is an article stating that suffocation is no longer considered SIDS. People need to stop preaching the back to sleep because I know so many mothers that have lost babies to SIDS that were on their backs it is not even funny it's actually pretty pathetic.

I would NOT sleep her on her stomach unless you are right there watching her. I would try propping up the end of her crib and also use a humidifier in her room. It also helps to suction out her nose a few times a day. This will get rid of the excess mucous. I know it is hard and I am sure you are also loseing sleep because of constant worry but I would not sleep her on her stomach until she is able to roll over both front to back and back to front which is usually around six to seven months. Sleeping babies on the back has decreased sids so much that I wouldnt take that chance. Make sure you take her in if she has rapid breathing and is pulling in at the ribs when she is breathing. Dont mean to scare you but I want to make sure your little one is on her way to a full, fast recovery. Good luck!!

Please don't put your child on their stomach. I lost my 7 week old to sids. The best time for a child to start sleeping on their stomach is around 11 to 13 months. SIDS can happen all the way up to 2 years of age.

Place a pillow under the mattress to lift on end. With the head lifted the child with breath better.

My daughter had a lot of ear infections at that same age and we had the same problem. If she laid on her back the runoff and pain would cause her issues. So we let her sleep in her bouncy seat or swing and then put her right next to our bed. She did a lot better and slept a lot sounder as well. I hope this helps a little. It's not really a good idea unless absolutely necessary for the child's health (the reflux example etc) to let them sleep on their stomach. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon!

My doctor told me not till about 6 mo old. By then they can usually roll over pretty well and the risk of sids goes down drasticly. To be on the safe side I would still ask your baby's doctor at her next appt, my doctor told me that 3 years ago and you know how much they change things when it comes to babies.

Depends. My baby had GERD or reflux disease. He would vomit alot and the doctors at LeBonheur Childrens Hospital told me to let him sleep on his stomach so he wouldn't choke to death. I think it would be ok, just make sure there are no pillows, blankets, or toys that might get too close to her face

mt doctor always told me it is not safe for a young baby and less safe if they are sick!! put her on her side to help with the cold or prop (a little ) the head area of her bed by putting small blankets under the mattress. this is what my doctor always told me.

Put her on her side and roll up one of her lightweight blankets ..in a sausage type roll and put it in front of her belly...so she doesn't roll on her stomach. Personally if she is that congested I'd probably be sitting upright with her laying on my chest, maybe in the recliner if you have one.

When my baby was sick for the first time I had no clue what to do. My mother told me to sleep sitting up with her on my chest. This way she can breathe. I was very uncomfortable but my baby slept great.

They can successfully sleep on their stomachs when they can roll over and sit up on their own. In this instance, if she is not rolling over, I would roll up two towels and prop her on her side in between them in order to keep her off her stomach, but still allow her sinuses to drain. Also, use a dehumidifier in her room.
