You will live for whatever length of time it takes you to hit the bottom of the elevator once it reaches the loud noise at the bottom.

No, there is no benefit to jumping up and down in a falling elevator.

In fact, laying flat on one's back on the floor is recommended for the best chance of survival = no direct impact, but only dynamic dissipation of deceleration.

Take the stairs. ;-)

Well first of all you can't really "jump" because if the elevator is falling, then so are you. You will be in free fall and weightless, so I don't see how you can actually jump.

If somehow you were able to jump right before the elevator crashes, you better hope you're jumping with the same speed that the elevator is falling.....which means you'll still die.

You didn't mention how far the elevator fell. A very important part of the question.

In the building where I worked, there were only 2 floors. I figured I'd survive if the elevator fell from that distance.

I don' think you can jump faster than the elevator is falling. The elevator is only so high. You have to jump really high and at the exact moment with is rather difficult to anticipate.

No! You are going the same speed the elevator is traveling. You wont hit as hard as the elevator unless you weigh as much as it does. But, you will crash and most likely die. let me know how it turns out.

mythbusters did an episode on this, and the answer is most definitely no. of course...that's if you're inside the elevator. if you're outside, and away, when it falls, and you jump, you would most definitely live. unless you jumped into a well...in which case the outcome is uncertain.

not likely. that is of course assuming that you somehow manage to time your jump perfectly, you're still gonna die when the elevator walls and ceiling collapse on you
