5 answers

let the number of coins the boy have be x
let the number of coins the girl have be y

from first statement, x+1 = y-1
from second statement y+1 = 2(x-1) so y+1 = 2x-2

therefore, x= y-2
sub into the second statement,
y+1 = 2(y-2)-2
y+1 = 2y-6
y=2y-7
y=7

sub y=7 into first statement

x+1 = (7)-1
x= 5

therefore boy has 5 coins girl has 7 coins

its that simple
(previous 2 answers are wrong)

B + 1 = G - 1 or B + 2 = G
(B - 1) x 2 = G + 1

Substitute "B + 2" from line one
in place of "G" in line two

(B - 1) x 2 = (B + 2) + 1
2B - 1 = B + 3
B = 4

Since B + 2 = G, then G = 4+2 = 6
Check your work

6 - 1 = 4 + 1 (if the girl gives the boy a coin, they both have 5)
6 + 1 = 2 x (4 - 1)
if the girl gets a coin from the boy, where she has 6 and he has 3, then she has double what he has

One possible solution is:
she has 5 coins, he has 3.
If she has 2 dimes and 3 nickles and he has 2 dimes and a nickle, when she gives him one coin they both will have 4.
If he gives her a nickle, he will have 2 dimes or 20 cents and she will have 2 dimes and 4 nickles or 40 cents, double what he has. ( I am assuming you meant double the value, not double the number).
