some of us had atari.. i didn't. i had an intelevision though. baseball on that system once was advertised as the most realistic baseball game ever. i much preferred kool aid, astrosmash, pitfall, and vegas blackjack
when nintendo came out, the graphics were SO much better! things actually looked ..more real! even better than some arcade games, it was just so amazing. but it was too expensive (i forget the introductory price, but i think it was around 200 - which wasn't a common thing to spend on a small electronic entertainment).
in 1988, after school, i'd come home and watch the super mario show. not because the show was so great, but because i wanted to call in and win a nintendo. i never thought of it back then, but perhaps if my mom had dialed for me, i would have won. however, for christmas 1990, i got a nintendo. me, my dad, and my mom would play like 4-5 hours a day until we mastered mario 1 to a point that some people couldn't even fathom. we, as consumers, didn't really think about what was next - nintendo was an awesome system, and still has an incredible number of great, working titles. final fantasy, dragon warrior IV, contra, etc..
super nintendo and sega started their little console war. sonic was able to move so fast, and both systems were so much more detailed, it was incredible. many people didn't have both systems for a while. nintendo also had it's gameboy, which even if it looks crappy now, it was amazing then. so many games that you could play ...on the go. sega then had the gamegear - which was so amazing, simply because it had color.
yea, color. little steps like this were actually seen as amazing, sometimes rather unexpected.

I remember way back to the Atari on up til now. And yes it was the bomb (NES). Each time a new game system came out the graphics just kept getting better. But I couldn't even imagine them being like they are now, back then. We all were just happy with it, & waited to see what was next.

Since I owned one back then and still own one now I know da answer. People considered it the most technological advance in the gaming industry. It's graphics were semi-on par wit arcades. the graphics back then were amazing, sound quality was great. Atari was whooped on when the NES dropped on American shores. The system is still pretty damn good, because they rarely break down.
Yes they envisioned the graphics we have now. dat's why they kept advancing the systems as technology advanced.

I used to watch my dad playing Street Fighter 2 on a Sega machine when I was only 4. To me, it was almost like today's Final Fantasy graphics. It's surprising to see how far we've gone in terms of graphics.
