The 512 K represents your download speeds.
The 256 K represents your upload speeds.

let me elaborate for you

When you are on Dial up you are on 56 K..

When you are on high speed your download is 9.142857143 times faster than dial up.

Download speeds are how fast you get the information

Your upload speeds are 4.571428571 times faster than Dial up.

Upload speeds are how fast you GIVE information (sending a file to a friend)

klechak's answer has so far been the most useful to you... I just want to ask you what service you are thinking of getting? Sounds like DSL but an even slower one than I've heard and know people who have it. If you have a cable internet carrier in your area, like Comcast Cable, I'd go with that. I have it and I get DL (downloads) of upwards of 22Mb p/s (22,000,000 BITS per second), which works out to about 2,700 KB p/s (2.7MBytes or 2,700,000 bytes per second!). I have the fastest connect I know with broadband, but I have a few friends who see about the same. That's about 42 TIMES faster than that 512 d/l of the service you are thinking of getting! Call them and find out... My service claims I should be getting roughly 16MB down and about 512Kb UP, but I get a lot more down and slightly less than 512 down. Anyhow, check into Comcast. Good luck to ya!!!

They usually give you download (the first number) and upload (the second number) speeds. The second is always lower because you're usually recieving more data than you're sending.

The bigger the number, the faster the connection.
