Have you walked into a dark movie theatre , coming in from a bright outside? Do you see at all? It takes time, some time to get acclamatised to the darkness. .
Most of us are in the "dark" when it comes to life. Where are we going? why? How? ....... we are not sure. In such situation you need not find your way as you donot know your destination.
But , the moment you decide on one destination you start getting acclamatised to the darkness and you will see a beacon of light. For sure. That single , dim light will dispel the darkness and you can set your direction.
But, many many people are looking for a big , bright light to lead them. It will never happen.

The obvious answers are :
Turn on a light
Feel around
I assume though that you are asking about times when this is impossible.
If it is really dark ( no light at all) then it's tough. Usually there is light, though it might be undetectable. You're eyes will get accustomed to low levels of light and you can begin to see in rooms which at first appear dark.
If there is still not enough light, You can use night goggles which either amplifies or shift undetectable light enough for you to see by.
In total darkness, though, you'll have to rely on other senses. It is nearly impossible to walk straight for any significant legnth of distance without some type of sensory feedback. There are blind people who can use sound to direct them (a "sonar" of sorts) but they are rare and it takes a lifetime of training to use is reliably.
Using a cane would help, or having someone guide you (why they are not in darkness too, though, is another question) Other, out-side-the-box answers would be to have the path roped so you could follow the rope, have someone call out for you so you could follow their voice, or stay where you are until the situation changes.

As in life. You reach out and find something familiar to hang on to. Get your bearings. Take one step at a time. Letting your intuition and touch tell you where you are. Take one step at a time and let your sense of feel your way around. You well never know where you are going until you finally get there. Then search for the light.

Trick question. If you do not know where you are going, it does not matter if it is dark or not. You do not know where you are going so you will never find your way.

Im a Bat, what I do is shreek very loudly in a very high pitch, the shreek reverberates of nearby objects and my lugs catches the soundwaves, then my tiny brain calculates how far im away from hidden objects in my flight path allwing me to miss them and continue on my way.

Close your eyes.
Wait five minutes
Open your eyes - it probably wont seem as dark anymore, and you should be able to see a bit.

It begins with a thought, a shift in perception-decide that it is light and that you don't have to know where you are going/or not going
