For music i suggest downloading GS Player. All you have to do is transfer your mp3s, ogg vorbis or wav files to your SD card and then locate them via the program. Of course, windows media can play them too.

For videos, I highly suggest Coreplayer which plays mpegs and pocket div x files. To rip a dvd, use imtoo dvd ripper and rip to div x format. From there, use pocketdivx encoder to encode the div x file to pocket div x. move the file to your sd card and play it in coreplayer...you will be pleasantly surprised how good the video is. Each video is about 200 mb for a 2 hour movie.
