I have observed that students resort to Yahoo Answers frequently; their method of approach more often than not is simply pasting the question.
I used the internet quite a lot during my MBA, mostly for research and acquiring data... Yahoo answers though is a new product and pretty much ofers instant solutions to not just generic questions but mathematical equations etc because people are ready to pounce on the questions to win a best answer, or simply to help out.
The internet deprived the world of academia of reesearch out in the open to a large extent (which people like me prefer since I am working as a head of research in an investment bank AND I like my time spent in front of the PC too). But what about having your questions solved by real people instantaneously? We did have chat rooms but they are places where most of the people are away pr not willing to cater to the needs of a whining student.
So: Assignment help on Yahoo Answers
What is your take on this?

Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with helping people, depending on the nature of the help. As a teacher, I give my students assignments because I think the assignments will help the students to learn certain material. If a person, online or not, tells my students what to put for the answer, that is not helpful because my student did not have to learn the answer for him/herself. I consider that cheating and plagiarism. However, if a person gives my student the kind of help that helps him/her to figure it out for him/herself and be able to do similar problems in the future, I see no problem in that; that's the kind of help I would give my student if he/she asked me. For example, if someone asked me for help with a math homework problem, I would not do the problem for them, but I would show them how to do a similar problem, and then encourage them to do the homework problem on their own.

I do not think that anyone who asks for answers ALL the time in here and then turns in those answers is going to pass a test; do you? I have been known to help but it is hopefully in the form of guidance as in a website...mostly what I see in here is sheer laziness...occasionally I have seen someone with a legitimate question and it is easy to see why they need help and I help them but seldom with the actual answer...ironically I see LOTS of wrong answers in here and I am certain it is not on purpose; ignorance abounds so people should be careful what they ask for...and then there are all the misspelled words when there is spell check...

My take is basically the same as yours and the obviously simple- minded, pass the question along game disgusts me. Especially considering they sit infront of the most incredible information machine ever known to man, and still do just that, like the pimply faced idiot behind me in the seventh grade did.

Honest sticky points are fine with me but they seem very rare.

It has been ever thus however and this fact isn't changed by the tech......alas

If the person gets their question answered that is great and I think it also help others to become knowledgeable and educated as well.. Sometimes its better in doing the research for themselves and having to pay for tutorial from someone else. To me you get faster answers on Yahoo than most chat rooms.

It may be acceptable for primary and secondary school students but up to a certain point. I would stress that the answers they get may be a good resource to point him/her in the right direction for further research. However it would be unacceptable if someone would cite it as a reference in a paper.

I believe some use it appropriately and others use it as a quick fix. Regardless, it's another tool a student can use to ensure the foundation stones of their education are a bit more solid.

i think its appropriate for math if they have no one else to help them at home or whatever and need some one to do a sample problem for them, like if they were to go to a tutor. Most math tutors practically do their students entire math hw. but i dont think its appopriate if theyre taking advantage of yahoo answers and using it as a source for making others do their hw for them. but if you think about it yahoo answers isnt even pratical in terms of cheating, if kids wanted to cheat on their hw might as well copy from one of thier classmates.
