Moot question. Everything DOES matter and at the same time NOTHING matters. Whether or not one is worse is like asking if Mrs. Lincoln liked the play.

Pass the scotch.

We might already be living in a universe where nothing matters (on a cosmic level).

Living in a universe where everything mattered would be horrible.

If we knew everything mattered, there would be no true free will.
Can you imagine living in a universe where your every action had obvious and far reaching consequences? You couldn't move without effecting someone or something else.
Such a universe would either breed monsters or saints, with nothing in between.

And I find the thought of living in a universe where everything matters and not knowing that it does abhorrent.
That supposes a diety that judges us without mercy or caring.

That is a provocative question. Which is worse for me? I would say a universe in which everything matters is more frightening to me because it means that we are not here by chance but by design. Since I live my life with the belief that we are here by chance and that one day all that we know will cease to be, I am less frightened by the thought the we live in a universe in which nothing matters. In our daily lives we create a world in which things matter so that we can bear this existence, but, in the long-range scheme of things, nothing matters.

I prefer the universe the way it is. For instance: Gravity and Electromagnetic force are both integral parts of our universe. However, you could say that electromagnetism "matters" more, because it is much stronger than gravity. So obviously, as each force serves a different purpose, it "matters" what they are, what they do, and how well they do it. On a sub-atomic level, though, there is an INCREDIBLE amount of randomness, in movements of sub-atomic particles, fluctuations in energy, etc. In fact, positions of objects on that level are described as "probabilities", not "places". It is PROBABLE the particle is there, but it might be over there... the actual location of the particle doesn't matter, because the overall outcome is the same no matter WHERE it is.

Woof. Long and boring, I'm sure. Sorry. But I thought it was a great question, and it obviously got me thinking. Thanks.

I would argue they are both the same.

If something matters it has importance greater than other issues. If everything matters (I assume you mean to the same degree) then nothing has any more importance than anything else, so all things matter equally.

All things matter equally in a "nothing matters universe" , just the same as they do in a "everything matters" universe.
