I have an IBC Thinkpad. I am traveling to Europe in 6 months and need to know if it can be safely plugged into 220 and other European outlets..

You may be able to get an alternate power adapter, but you will have to be more specific. There are thousands of variants of Thinkpads, I own several kinds myself.

you don't need to buy anything expensive, just a set of plug adapter. You can buy these at Radio Shack, or even Target Stores for $15 or less. Read the label on your IBM AC adapter. The adapter is an auto-switching power supply operating at 110-220V and 50-60 cycles. in the us it operates at 110/60, in Europe 220/50.
You didn't say where you are traveling in Europe. The UK uses a different plugs than the rest of Western Europe. Eastern Europe uses a different one altogether. So, don't buy one adapter, get the whole set -they're cheap.

Nope. You need to either convert the power to the US standard by using a good transformer, or buy a new power cord. I strongly recommend buying a new cord. The cord you have now has two lengths of cord with a brick in the middle. The ones for Europe look pretty much the same, but the brick handles the 220 volt current.

Find a computer store in the area where your going. If you're going to Scotland, there's one in a big purple building just down the street from the Edingburgh Marriott. Otherwise, you're on your own.

NO, You need a 120 outlet. or a voltage converter. Most hotels that i have stayed in in Asia have 120 outlets as well for US type plugs , but I can not swear to that in Europe. Be carfull not to buy a cheap travel converter as they may not be recomended for PC use. also I do know that in the places I did stay in Europe they did have you can use for this and other purposes. You can call ahead and ask. Also you can contact IBM and get the charger/adapter for your pc for 220v and just get a plug adapter kit.
