Companies are clearing there computers out to make from Vista. You can get a good deal nowadays on computer with 512MB RAM standard. Vista requires at least 1GB and companies do not want to repackage "old models." only a few months old.

Everyone has there own favorite opinion on computers and it is all based on experience Here is some experience I can share with you.

Warranty is very important buy a 2 year warranty it shouldn't cost that much. It comes standard with 1 year and 3 years is just outrageous. Companies usually charge you alot of money if you do not have a warranty or it expired. If you are a first time consumer I would advise you to get the 2 years. that way if something breaks after 1 year which usually does for some reason you will be covered.

Make sure the warranty is NOT with the store it is WITH the company itself ex Dell, Compaq,HP. Store warranty stinks period they take long to fix your computer and when they do you would have had time to buy a new one.

here are some cheap ones you can probally buy at your local store:

You should check the computers.

here is some basic info:
Todays standard CPU is above 1.0Ghz
RAM: Standard is 512MB
Hard Drive: 100GB or more
Monitor: Cart is fine (like a Tv) LCD(Flat)
RPM of a Hard drive: 7200RPM
CD DRIVE: DVD-ROM/CD-RW (combined together)

DVDROM is to read DVD's DVD-RW means you can burn DVD's

CD-RW means you can burn your own CD

Cheapest Desktops: Dell, E-Machine,HP, Compaq

I like HP. I have had mine for over 4 years now. No repairs. I suggest getting the restorations CD's as well as the built in restore partition if at all possible.
Costco has the best 6 month return policy for any reason.

Dell. No doubt.
Get their fastest Celeron processor with a CD burner. Don't get any of the extra crap. Uninstall all the crap software that you didn't ask for as soon as you get the PC.
