Lasting so long, for starters. It was the remains of the Eastern Roman empire in the city which Constantine set as the eastern Rome. It was the seat of Eastern orthodoxy for the Christian church that preserved its prominance despite being attacked by those of Roman Catholocism and later Islam for literal centuries. It was that orthodoxy that brought a Russian Czar visiting to Greece into Christianity. The Russian Orthodox Church then was the Russian franchise of sorts for the national Christian religion, practiced under the Byzantine pattern.
