Decomposing materials tend to give off gasses, thus causing the body to swell.
Nice to see that the three first answers are correct. And who said anything about the body being in water? Have you ever seen a deer on the side of the road after it was hit by a passing vehicle??? I don't see them bloating due to water consumption or failure to breath. If you don't really know anything about biology, then don't answer questions.

Depends on how long they have been, where the body is- the weather- etc- and was there any injury- I have declared a few people dead- at home and in the nursing home- no swelling noted-Now if they were left out a long time- the tissues and organs would break down causing swelling-D

Your body is no longer working to hold fluids in.. so they are loose and cause the body to swell because it is out! That and bacteria is now growing inside.

well it depends, if the person drown, then its cuz they are full of water, i think the reason the bodies do is because everything just poos up inside you, and the extra oxygen and carbon thats in your body tries to realease, but i'm not sure, i can't really remeber
