it's more effective than the pill (the Mirena is, anyway). Not likely to be pregnant, but it does happen. Yes, it is long term birth control. The Mirena IUD I have will last 4 or 5 yrs.

Chances of pregnancy on the "newer" iud's (late 90's-NOW) have a fauilure rate of 0.1% that pregnant aunt the 1st poster posted about the child has to be in their teens OR and adult already since it was very common when the IUD came out thats why it was taken off the market and new ones were designed. had you opted for tubal ligation your chances of pregnancy would be 0.5% so mirena and paraguard are more effective than tubal ligation!

ALSO its a myth IUD's do not cause ectopic pregnancies they just dont prevent those thats why its adviced a woman who has had an ecctopic pregnancy not have an IUD fitted

You can get pregnant with an IUD in place. The risks of that are that if it is actually a normal pregnancy with the baby in your uterus, then the wires of the IUD can become imbedded in your unborn child as it grows...I know for a fact. Plus, you are supposed to get it taken out if you are pregnant and there's a 50%chance of aborting your baby when you do so. My mirena was actually put in wrong and punctured my uterus. It lasts 5 years. The older ones were for 10 years but i'm thinking my dr. said they don't have them for that period of time anymore. Think carefully before getting this if you haven't already.
