babies always need blankets!! you could crochet one or buy some fleece and make one out of that babies love soft things..if you dont like that idea, then maybe something that they can have as a keepsake..like a home decorated jewelry box if its a girl...

I know that it's easy to make blankets, booties, burp-cloths etc. but as a new mother I can tell you that I received an OVER-abundance of those things...even home-made ones. Although the home-made ones were nice, I have hardly been able to use them. Things to make that I would have LOVED to receive however:
1. A neck rest for the car-seat (something that would comfortably go around baby's neck without pushing the head forward like a rolled towel does, and keep it from sloshing forward) - especially useful for when they outgrow the newborn padding.
2. Art Aprons instead of bibs - also extremely useful for a long period of time. Remember those aprons they would make kids wear in kindergarten? They are the BEST for keeping food off legs and laps.
3. Wal-Mart sells patterns for grocery cart and high chair fabric covers that can be individualized. My mother and I have made some and they take about an afternoon (depending on your sewing experience). I would add straps to attach toys with.
4. Large Mats to be placed under a high chair (one way to personalize this is to buy cheap linoleum flooring, turn it over, and paint it with a special pattern. Then polyeurathane the whole thing. There are examples of this type of project on hgtv.com and diy.com)
5. A washable mesh bag to wash baby socks in so the pairs don't get lost in laundry
6. Any type of organizer that can be hung from the changing table
Good luck! Hope this helps!

Homemade gifts are always a great idea! You could buy plain onesies as WalMart or the like and decorate them with fabric markers or fabric paint or hand embroidery. You could also do socks, blankets, pants, burp cloths, etc. and make a gift set!

If this is for Christmas then I would start by making a little baby snowman and then leave a note in the box explaining that every year as the baby ages the snowman will get a little older, so when they get old enough, they can look back at all the little snowmen and see how they've aged. Then you have a gift for them every year!

a great idea which is perfect for the holidays is making a levis stocking. it is very easy and you can get really creative with it, it is simple get some old (not raggy) jeans cut both pant legs off in the shape of a stocking. then get cotton for stuffing it with. and get a nice material for the inside of the stocking. sow up the levis and inner material then stuff cotton inside between the two. You can sow on lace and use fabric paint to decorate it.

The best gift I got as a baby shower gift, was a little basket, with a nice soft little blanket in the bottom and my friend loading the basket with tiny bottles of everything, oils, soaps, lotions, swabs, baby clippers, pasifiers.. anything that she found tiny that would fit in the basket.. I used every single item she put in that basket.. and the fact that they were tiny, I was able to put them in a diaper bag for travel purposes later..

I made a homemade scrapbook for one of my close friends - I bound the book, designed the cover, and got copies of her ultrasounds and "belly pictures" from her husband, and started the scrapbook, and decorated a few pages for right after the baby's born, and left the rest blank for her to do with as she pleased.

Baby blankets are wonderful and easy to make. Look at the fabric store, get a piece of filling and choose fabric that is soft and washable. I just made one this year and forgot how much fun it is, You can personalize the blanket by emroidering the baby's name when you know it.

How about a baby blanket. You take 2 different patterns of cute patterned flannel, put them together, cut notches in them and tied the notches togehter all around the blanket. It made a really cute blanket.

You could knit a small blanket, a beanie hat, or a bib for this particular newborn baby.
