Your son may not be ready to wean. Some children need more time. You should wait until he is a year, then he can transition to whole milk instead of formula. Formula is very expensive. If you feel it is time, there are some things you can do to encourage it. Since he is nearly a year old you may want to skip the bottle and go directly to a cup, unless he takes a bottle already. Find a few good sippy cups, and begin with just water at mealtimes. Once your son get a hang of drinking from the cup, pick a feeding to give up. I suggest sometime during the day when he is not going to sleep. Then, instead of giving him the breast, offer him the cup. Let him know that it is not time to nurse. Once you have done that, pick a feeding to give up every three days or so. That way, your body will adjust to the decrease in demand. The right before bed and first thing in the morning will probably be the last to go. If you choose to nurse past a year, there is nothing wrong with that. My son nursed until he was 2. Although after a year and a half, he only nursed right before bed and first thing in the morning.

Reduce how often you nurse him. If he nurses six times a day take away the one closest to his biggest food meal of the day and offer a cup at that time. Juice or formula or milk in a cup, not a bottle or you'll have to ween him from it soon also. In about 4-5 days he should be used to this and you can take away another nursing close to another meal time. The before bed one should probably be the last to go. Early morning nursing was hard for me because I never wanted to get up and fix breakfast when I could just nurse them back to sleep. But if you can get up and feed him quick it won't be difficult to stop that one either. Also, when you do nurse during the day do it after he eats food, not before, so he won't nurse as much. This gradual weening will be easier on your body than stopping outright also.

Why do you feel its time to stop? Is it outside pressure? It sounds like your BABY still needs to nurse. Think of his needs before your own.
The World health organization recommends breastfeeding until at least 2 years of age. your baby will not suddenly become a calf on the 31st! Weaning should be a mutual agreement between mother and child, not a cruel denial of a necessary source of nutrition and comfort.

Have someone else feed him. I had to let other family members feed my son from a bottle. Besides the fact that he's old enough to recognize you, he can smell you. He knows your scent. He knows you've got the goods, so why should he take a bottle from you. Let him get used to the bottle from some one else, then he will come to accept it from you.

You have to slowly wean him off the breast. Introduce him to the bottle atleast once a day. As he starts to get use to the bottle he wont even remember the breast.

My son was the same way. He hated the bottle. I did mine 'cold turkey', no breast at all! He missed a couple feedings, but he got hungry and eventually took the bottle.
