You do NOT want to drink alcohol at all for one day prior to intense athletic competition. It dehydrates you, and can impair deep, restful sleep.

You definitely want to be thoroughly hydrated, water and juice are best. You need to be conscious of hydration for a full day before major competition. College and NFL players consume a lot of fluid the day before games to prevent muscle cramps.

Aim for a good balanced meal, with an array of protein, carbs, fiber, minerals and vitamins. Your day before meal should include salad and vegetables as well as meat and pasta/potatoes.

What type of sporting event? I ran CC and track all through high schoo and college and now I race under sponsorship from several companies. My favorite pre race meal is a fish fry with potato, salad, and a beer or glass of wine. It's a great combination of protien, carbs, and fats. Plus it's not as "heavy" as the traditional pasta dinner.

i'd think pasta is good. you need all those carbohydrates.

I'm not sure of a specific dish but I'd try to eat a lot of meat like beef and pack the carbs. I'd think maybe a steak or something. and a nice glass of milk. don't want that sugary juice.

depends on the event- pasta and carbs are great for lasting energy ie marathons etc.

red meat is high in iron and other esentials for most sports I would suggest this.
