If you have read frank herbert's "Dune" you would know this already, so I will assume you have not.
All you need do when you feel afraid is recite the litany against fear :

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

It helps, a lot....

I get really depressed sometimes watching the news. It's all bad, and it's designed to incite fear and anger and a feeling of being unsafe. So the first thing is to filter the news you hear by maybe getting it from the paper or the Internet.

Secondly, carry pepper spray on your keychain, don't walk to your car alone in the dark, and always walk with your head and shoulders up, and pay attention to your surroundings. People who do these things rarely get kidnapped because they're not an easy target, and if you are targeted, you can mace the person.

When I am walking to my car, even in daylight, I carry my keychain in my hand, I get in the car, and immediately lock it.

Taking precautions will conquer your fear. You can't control your future, but you can minimize your risk of harm and danger, and that's the best medicine for getting over this.

Good luck.

I read a passage from a scifi novel. Its what i say when i am afraid. 'I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.' Fear is nothing, its just thoughts, overcome these thoughts, let nothing control your mind. Your mind will become clear, you will be able to face anything. BTW, i am not afriad of anything much...

You have to face your fears.

In your case though, I'd probably just realize that kidnapping is more rare than you think. Just be cautious and aware of your surroundings.

you want to know why they always talk about kidnapping on the news? because it's rare. not every car crash shows up. or every rape. or anything that happens often. murder and kidnappings are rare, so they show up on the news whenever they happen.
and you need to make confidence in yourself. take a self defense class and make sure you're constantly aware of your surroundings. if you take just a few steps to make sure in the event of someone trying to kidnap you, you could easily defend yourself, your fear will be lessened. i hope it all works out.

If you are a Christian and know the Lord--just focus your thoughts on Him and not your fears. You will find perfect peace as you lay your fears at His feet and let Him take care of them for you. His plans are so much better than ours.

Breath. Pray.
Breath and start to pray to God that he will help you accept your fear and inevitable death. Pray that He would protect you and nothing that you can't handle comes your way. Pray that He be with you and promises to take you with him, when he chooses.
Then Live.

There is nothing to fear- but fear itself. Crimes happening is scary and creepy, ya just can't live in fear. I can go on, but it won't help any.

It isn't as bad as you think.
