people were skeptical because they didn't exactly know how to preserve the original creator's intent without ruining it and whether all the effects of time actually contribute to the work's appeal. In the end critics decried the result as too bright and colorful. However now the paintings are restored to the way there were intended to look and are no longer covered with soot and such.
