my step-son is turning 18 next week! :)
he made a list of friends (12 kids) that he is planning to invite to his big birthday party SO, we bought him movie passes and a gift certificate to his favorite restaurant so he can treat all of his friends to a night out on the town that he can afford :)
a less expensive idea is to send several boxes of pizza to his school for his lunch hour on the big day. that's been another fun birthday surprise in the past.

I would say buy him a gift card for Best Buy. All men love video games, movies, and music, and giving him the option of letting him pick out what he wants is a plus too. I know it's not very personal, but this way you don't have to deal with buying him something he doesn't like & will take back anyway! Good luck!

Just give him money or a gift card to whatever store he likes. I have a nephew that is 19 and that is what I do for birthday or xmas then he can get whatever he wants.

He would probably love a gift card to Best Buy, Circuit City, a music store, Radio Shack, etc.
Don't get him clothes unless you absolutely KNOW what size and what style. Best not to try.
If he's into clothes, though, ask his mom/dad what his favorite store is. Try a gift card to that store.
If he's got a girlfriend he'd also like a gift card to the movies! Most theaters have them. He can use that for a few free dates. Free popcorn and tickets are always great to have. : )

AS 'Red Letter Day' gifts can cost heaps you could buy some investment like Premium Bonds. Or in good department stores why not use the services of a 'personal shopper'?

What hobbies does he like? Is he involved in any sports in school? Favorite color? What has he been "in" to lately? Does that give you a starting point?
