I was just watching an episode of desperate housewives and one of the caracters went down to her mailbox and put mail in it. Why is she putting mail in her own mailbox?? does the mail man pick up mail she wants to post from there and posts it for her?? lol...sounds funny but i was just curious after seeing this...(as we dont do that in my country)

(im not from america and was wondering if they must do this?? where im from if we need to post letters then we have to go drop them at the post office or in a post office box which is located at different locations around the town)...not our own mailbox (but that would be handy!)

So is this what happens?

Yes, the mailmen (or women) DO pickup mail from your mailbox here in America. You put stamped letters you want to send in your mailbox and there's a red flag on the side of the mailbox you lift up. That lets the mail person know that even if you aren't getting any mail that day, they still need to stop and pickup your "outgoing mail".

Honey here if you want to send out mail you put it in the box and put the flag up and the postman will pick it up and take it to the post office for you. It is a normal thing here. I do it all the time. God Bless. It is just one of the conveniences here.

When someone put's mail in their own mailbox, it means they are mailing that letter or package, the mail or package has to be preposted with prebought stamps, but when they put it there and raise the little red "flag", it signals the postman to take what is in there and put it into a delivery process. He / She then put in the mail that is to be delivered to you, in the mailbox.

yes if you raise the red flag he takes the mail , idiots who live in buildings and have never lived in a house probably dont think its possible but its true the mail man does pick up the mail from your box here

Actually, in America, the mailman only delivers mail to your house, they do not pick it up. There are special mailboxes out on the street where the mailmen pick up letters from and you can take the letter to the post office and mail it from there. I don't know why they showed that on Desperate Housewives.
