Everyone here is wrong(and I am 100% POSITIVE ON THIS) If you are asking the question very very loosely, the club with the most popular "household name" is most likely Manchester Utd(huge in asia where populations are much higher than the west)
BUT, in terms of actual ASSOCIATES(fans that pay to have a membership with the club) SL BENFICA of portugal has the highest membership of fans than any other club. In fact, they just surpassed Manchester United's fan membership earlier this year.

If it's national, surely it's Germany. The only team who can challenge Brazil in World Cup title collections.
If it's club, surely it's Liverpool. Well I'm being biased there but hey we're 1 CL Cup title behind Milan and 4 CL Cup titles to catch up Real Madrid.
