i own a repair shop, and this means there is a leak in the car somewhere ,causing this to happen it drawing the moisture up to the glass in it,,it may be leaking around a door or something,,but that's what causes this to happen ,i have repaired a lot of vehicles that had this problem,,look for a leak around a door or a window, and feel the carpet and see if its wet,,and if you have rubber floor mats this will cause it also,,they draw moisture really bad,,good luck i hope this help,s.

My wife says that that used to happen in her old VW's decades ago, and it was because the defrost vents on the windshield allowed air in the car, and as the humidity in the air got on the windshield, which was below freezing due to the outside temperature, the humidity would freeze on the windshield, on the INSIDE of the windshield, as well as on the inside of the back windshield and back passenger windows. Like dodge man says, you have a leak of outside air coming into the car, or the wet carpets and mats may cause the problem too, and you need to leave a window or two open just slightly in order to keep the humidity from adhering to your windshield as it will do when there's nothing forcing the air to circulate through the car and not collect on the windshield. Or, as R1 volta said, you can change the setting on your heater dial, away from defrost and on to heat and recirculate, and the problem should be solved. God Bless you.

yeah, I agree with Mr. Mechanicman. It's usually caused by a leak. However, if you're in your car right before you shut it up for the night, it's possible that negligible amounts of moisture from your breath will condense on the inside of your windows and freeze over night. One solution is definitely to leave one window open just a crack as long as your car is inside a garage

You have a wet carpet. Leave your window open a little. Make sure you have your heater control set to bring in outside air.
If its on recirculate , its only using inside air and you expel a lot of water vapor.

Eliminate whatever the source is for the moisture that is turning to ice.

Park in a heated garage.
