I just bought two RAM chips to upgrade my laptop. There is a metal covering on each chip that covers the memory module. It does not cover the connector area. Am I supposed to take the metal covers off before installing the chips??

Probably not, that is probably a heat spreader. It is meant to pull the heat off of the chips quicker so they remain cool.

I believe those metal covers are heat spreaders, don't remove them it's very useful for the RAM to get rid of heat!

If they can fit into your laptop without any problem, then no. Those covers are heat spreaders, they keep your memory cooler. But alot of times, if you have them installed, it will not fit in your laptop.
