When James Gosling got the idea of creating a programming language like java, he was drinking coffee, which is branded java. That was the name reason for Java and also why java has been given the coffee in a cup icon.

As far as the history of the language is concerned, Gosling was thinking about the name and looked out of window and decided to call it Oak after the tree in his yard. While discussing with the team (lead by Gosling) someone pointed it to him that a language called OAK is already existing. So, they decided to change the name. They were drinking Coffee made from beans grown in JAVA island. They went for it and here we have "Java". Hope that heped.
