well if it' vtec that should be written on the engine cover.. but if you don't see it, try revving it up to 6000 rpm, it should change the sound at around 5000rpm to hi cam profile.. white smoke is not loose compression.. and if you have less power then you should tune it up, timing is the most important for its power.. and white smoke is water.. if you see blue smoke then you have to overhaul it.. by the way do white smoke comes out only mainly when the engine is cold? if so, thats normal.. that's condensation..

A 1996 Honda Civic EX has a VTEC engine. Vtech is a cordless phone which is the cheapest so far.

White smoke from the exhaust is water vapor when you started the car in the cold morning.

White smoke from the engine is the coolant leaking from the engine.

Loss of power, sounds like, you are going to have a very expensive engine repair. In my 1997 Honda Civic LX, I have the same problem (loss of power), and I failed the smog test, but manage to fix it.

No, you car doesn't have vtech. They never made a cordless phone for Honda.

If, however you mean vtec...
Unless the car has had an engine swap (which I doubt) then, yes you have the d16y8 which is Vtec. The cover probably won't say vtec on it, though I'm not really sure why. Honda kinda put some with vtec and some with just honda.

ex's should have vtec. should be written on valve cover. i believe it is the head gasket...i had the same problem with a tercel...probably from pushing the car to it's limit all the time...just cuz it's a honda doesn't mean rev the hell out of it. when my head gasket blew, smoke blew outta the pipe like crazy and yes, major difference in power. gasket's blown so water and oil's leaking into combustion chamber. end result from your engine burning oil and water is smoke. that might be it.

if it's a vtech it would say so on the engine head or on the back of the car. as far as the smoke there's lots of reasons. possibly your head gasket going bad.

a ex is a SOHC V-tech engine. white smoke means your piston ring is loosen/spoil, get yourself a new VTI engine or overhual it.
