You need to do some basic trouble shooting. Is there spark?. Pull a plug lead and put an old plug or small screwdriver in the end of the lead. Have someone try to start engine while you hold the lead near a ground. It should have a bright blue spark. If using the plug touch the plug to the block. The electrode spark should be a bright.
Is there fuel? If it has a carb see if fuel sprays from carb when you open the throttle.
You may just need a fuel filter. Check for a rusted fuel line, very common on 10 year old cars

Have a second person help you during your investication. While engine is cranking see if you are getting spark by taking out a spark plug and checking the gap for arc. Also check to see if the fuel injectors are firing by placing a screw driver directly on them and the handle in your ear hole. You should hear a crisp click as they fire on and off. If those 2 factors are there, try replacing your fuel filter. I think they are like $15.

I had a similar issue with my truck years ago. My ignition switch was loose, and my fuel pump worked intermittantly. Just an idea.

Well an engine needs two basic things to run, fuel and fire. So to narrow it down, check and see if you have fire, if you do, then its a fuel problem. If you don't have fire then its mostlikely a fireing problem.
