I'm an American--I'm near Mexico City. My Maxima that has 70,000 miles is making a sound when I accelerate--sounds like, "puh, puh, puh"--something like that. Seems like it is on the right side of motor. The dealer here said it is because the 3 motor mounts are broken, but it sounds like air is escaping. Any ideas? Someone in the States mentioned the exhaust manifold--I have no idea what that is. If it is the ex. man., would the repair be expensive and/or extensive? Any other ideas as to the problem? Thanks for any help.

Never go to a dealer except for warranty work. It sounds like an exhaust manifold problem. Motor mounts don't make noises. The exhaust manifold connects to your exhaust pipe, surely you know what that is. It connects on the right rear side of the engine. There is a flanged connection at that point that could be the problem or it could be a manifold gasket. You should be able to tell with a little inspection which it is. It is not a big problem but could get louder and annoying. There are a lot of shade tree mechanics that are pretty good in Mexico. Ask around, somebody probably has a relative that can fix it cheap.
