Ok, if you want some pointers.

Religious point:
Leviticus 20:13
If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Legal point:
If a gay marriage is legalized, then all forms of marriage should be also. You can discriminate other people who want to get married. This means a person could have multipule spouses, marry anything, or anyone, ie. mother, brother, sister, father, aunt or uncle. It is a slippery slope when marriage is not regulated to a man and a woman.

If marriage is a religious act, then the Federal government cannot may rules regarding it. The 1st amendment will not allow it. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."
So only the people can make gay marriage legal, according to the 10th amendment. "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people."
Thus here's the catch-22. Only about 15 to 20 percent of America will allow gay marriage. The rest are against it. The States that have allowed gay marriages have introduced a few monkey wrenches into the system. The laws across the US are suppose to be uniform. This means if you got married in one State the marriage would be legal in another State. This is not true with same sex marriage.

I hope this helps... I know this a problem the US is facing, but I still think the term "marriage" should be applied on to a man and a woman. I think the term "civil union" should be applied to same sex marriage. This way both will be protected.

I think that you should go not for the fact that it is 'wrong' persay, and not go that it is against people's religions and that it is against God and those that do it go to hell, yada yada.

I think that you should say something along these lines-
There are people who feel attraction to people of the same sex. This is not necisarrily a bad thing at all, but marriage should not be legalized for it. Not because it is wrong for a woman to love a woman in a romantic relationship, or a man to love a man in a romantic relationship, but because other people of the United States think that it is wrong. It is not that we are persecuting against the gay men and women of America, but rather we are not putting people who feel that marriage should be between only a man and woman in an uncomfortable position. It's not that it's wrong for them to be a couple, just not a married couple.

Oh, and Elle. A marriage may be something under God but people who DON'T believe in God get married every day. You want to stop that? Good luck. And marriage isn't just for pro-creating. It's for being in love. Millions of marriages do not end in child birth. And the person didn't ask for a God lecture. They asked for points to help with a speech.

Civil marriage is a legal status that automatically confers over a thousand federal rights and benefits1 and hundreds of additional state rights and benefits.2 Many of these rights are intended to help families in times of crisis, such as an automatic right to visit a spouse in a hospital or to make medical decisions for an incapacitated spouse. While some of these rights can be obtained, at least partially, through private agreements or other legal procedures, most cannot.

In addition to these important benefits, civil marriage is also a social and cultural institution that is understood world-wide as an expression of a couple's love and commitment to each other.

Worldwide, same-sex couples are permitted to legally marry in the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, and Spain. On May 17, 2004, Massachusetts became the first state in the United States to allow same-sex couples to marry.3 Currently, only Massachusetts residents are permitted to marry in Massachusetts.4

In the wake of Massachusetts, same-sex couples are seeking the freedom to marry in a number of other states, including California, Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Washington.

These views are not necessarily mine but they should get you started.

1. Allowing every sub-culture to impose their own definition of marriage on the majority by forcing the government to recognize their alternative life style devalues marriage as an institution.
a. this is significant because marriage is the primary way societies create stable homes for raising children. Less marriage means less stable homes equals more troubled children.
2. Slippery Slope argument - if we allow gays to have a legal right to marry why not allow multiple wives or any other consenting adults get married ie brothers and sister, mothers and sons etc.
3. Fraud - men or women might claim to be married just for benefits.
4. The law already allows gays to get married, married to members of the opposite sex. Therefore marriage applies equally to men and women, gay or straight, and there is no discrimination issue.

Not all arguments are as strong as others. Probably the 1st is the best. Good luck with your assignment.

It should not be legalized because marriage is a religious act done before god. Make it a different kind of marriage that only says they are married in the eyes of the government and nobody would be able to complain.

We create laws to protect individuals and to maintain society. Thus, laws need to evolve. For example, expanded voting rights. The debate is what will the impact of society be on gay marriage? Would it lead to more children born out of wedlock? Would it mean more HIV/AIDS? Many people, including me, believe that marriage is already in trouble, and more attacks on marriage means a further decay of society.

There's also the question of what do we tell our children? Do you really want your 6 year old learning about homosexual behavior? The problem is, you can discuss "mom and dad" without discussing sex. But it's hard to discuss homosexuality without the sex factor.

Ugh I wanted to help you out but anything I hear about this topic is just usually so dumb i can't stomach it. Even as I'm trying to list things for you to say I am thinking against it. I hear things like gays aren't recognized in the eyes of god, gay parents will raise gay kids, homosexuality is invalid bcus gays can't produce children and the goal of society is to bear fruit. blah blah blah bullshit......

anyway here are a couple of links that argue both sides and do so intelligently for the most part so i hope this helps better than i could

perhaps because it shouldn't be classified as marriage. Marriage is between a man and a woman. If gays want to have the right to 'marry' they ought to just call it something else.
