I'm planning a trip to europe in january too. I'm taking a eurolines bus (169 euro) and for 15 days you can cover nearly every important cities there is in western europe. I'm going to start from Berlin, then Geneva, the down to Florence Italy, then Rome for a few days then Venice, then up to Salzburg, Vienna and then Prague. Which I estimated to be around 1000 euro, inclusive of the eurolines bus pass. But I had to do extensive research to search for the cheapest accomodations, etc.

I lived with a family there, so I'm not a great source of where to stay hotel wise. If you can get transportation to Fajardo definitely take the ferry to the island of Vieques. Vieques has the bioluminescent bay, where you can actually swim in glow in the dark water. It's so cool. There also are a lot of smaller and more affordable hotels there. I would just be careful when you're out at night. But otherwise I think you'll be fine! Enjoy! Puerto Rico has the greatest beaches!

One of the greatest things I have enjoyed is the DK Eyewitness travel book. If there is one for Switzerland, it may give you some good guidelines of hostels, which should be less expensive, but clean and relatively safe. After you arrive you may meet people who could rent you a small space. This is winter and you need to know where you are going so you don't freeze.
