Without knowing the size and scope of the department, any cop has to earn his wings---so to speak. Nothing replaces the quality experience of being on the beat. .....for a long time. Detectives are subject to calls at any time, and work when the info is available. maybe you can only talk to someone on a Sunday night at 9. Sounds nice now but it gets old real fast. Some people can't get past the cop stage---an undercover is usually easy to spot---commando haircut, stupid choice of clothes and shoes, big repainted patrol car, walkie talkie in the pocket, 3 or 4 pistols bulging--it all screams cop. Some people are not smart enough to be a detective---that's a whole different story. Piss off the chief and you'll never get it-----doing stupid stuff like horrible reports and lousy persoal interaction on the job. Usually a detective is equal to a sergeant or lieutenant----a test you will have to take and pass.Good luck and be safe

A police detective has to pass a VERY difficult exam plus to have so many years on the force before he can even be considered to take the test.
