there are two people on either side of the gorge, right?
okay, now one of them is a cowboy... and he can do awesome amazing lasso twirls (of course from Texas!)
and he does the most amazing lasso twirl there ever was, and the other person catches it!
sweeeeet huh?

or they start at a point where the land meets before it seperates, and the people start walking on different sides from there with the rope.

One way was to have some of the men take the long way around then the men on the other side would shoot and arrow across with a thin line. The men waiting would pull the line in. This line was attached to a thicker rope which was attached securely to both sides. From that point it was easy to pull additional ropes across until you had a fairly reliable footbridge with ropes on either side to hold as you walk across. similar to a tightrope with handrails. hope this helps to explain.
