Personalities are made from both nature and nurture IMHO. The nature part of the personality cannot change, however the nurture part of the personality can change. But, it would take a lot of work to change it--it would be like breaking a lifetime habit, possible, but very difficult. It would take a long-term change in environment (including people) to produce a change in personality.

I think that our basic personality stays the same but that it is our behavior that changes as a result of life happenings. A serious disability or illness could change a person's behavior; they could fall into a depression or see it as just another of life's challenges & behave accordingly. How they behave would be determined by their core personality.

A life's happening isn't the only reason behaviors change. A person can choose to change something about themselves. For instance, I tend to gossip & am trying very hard not to say anything negative about anyone. People can always make an effort to better themselves by changing their behavior in some way.

I don't know much about physcology (but I do know some, including the fact that spell checker in answers doesn't know how to spell it). But people change, although not often in major ways. And some times their personality does, too, for unknown reasons. Although some times it's due to a mixture of amnesia, extreme stress, and remembering combat (or similar training) but not where it came from, or even why a person has it. I have heard it theorized, that is one explanation of why some people are snipers-whether for pay or not.

Can "personalities" change?

YES. Many people change personalities same as they change clothes. (Some change often, others seem to never change.)

I believe we all have a basic (or core) personality. The "basic" personality is what it is. Other personality traits are acquired (and develop) through various life experiences.

As we grow, we learn to manipulate our thoughts and develop skills that enable us to "demonstrate" various personalities.

Of course... there are those who believe all people are mentally ill and need medication to control their mood.

But, I am not one of them. I know I am able to manipulate my own thoughts, and control my own actions in ways that allow me to demonstrate various personality types (at various times, and under a variety of circumstances).

Regarding the WHY... one of the most basic reasons "why" I change my personality is to match the personality of those I desire to get along with.

I believe others do the same. Whether or not they are "aware" of what they are doing, is another question.

internal factors can play a part, but it's often external factors and sometimes the need to adapt to those external factors that make the difference.
