I am just curious about all the people out there that tell me a fish is not an animal (when really it is).

This is mostly for people who think that fish aren't animals.

That sounds like something a semi-vegetarian would say. That way they could eat fish if they feel like they need to, without violating their principle that animals are not to be eaten. Fish are not mammals, and semi-vegetarians don't eat mammals. This strikes a compromise between the body's need for animal protien and the mind's need to avoid causing pain to other creatures that are complex enough to feel pain.

Say wha? Who says this? Fish are animals. Cold blooded or warm blooded scientists do not call what an animal is based on this because those classifications are for living creatures anyway(animals. : D ) however...I do see that common person not considering bugs as animals (which is also wrong) but that question would have been more understandable. hope that helped. : )

Jerry is probably right. The people who make that statement haven't learned the two broad classifications of living things - plants and animals. (Only a few very simple living organisms could be classified as both.) They probably would tell you that human beings aren't animals either.

It is probably because they confuse "animal" for "mammal".

In modern biology, fish are not only in the animal kingdom, they are pretty high up there...in the vertebrates.

However, the word "animal" in law often reflects the older pre-scientific use of the word, roughly equivalent to "nonhuman mammal". Wildlife laws commonly use phrases that distinguish "animals, birds and fish."

Next time say...So what is it? A green vegetable. Then tell them they wouldn't know their broccoli from a whole in the ground.

ps...remind them that "Animal, Vegetable , or Mineral" is more than just a dating choice. It describes everything on the face of the Earth.

Well, by saying "animal" some people mean "mammal" or even just any "livestock or cattle". And fish is neither of those.

I'm not sure who would say a fish isn't an animal, I think they may have said "fish has no meat"......

It might be because most animals (mammals) are warm blooded and fish are cold blooded.
