I have seen the moon look orange-ish, but I am wondering what causes this? and in what scenario could the biblical "blood-red" moon really occur? Nuclear fall-out?

Seeing a bood red moon is a rarer phenomenon than seeing a blue moon.. Moon appears redder when the amount of dust in the atmosphere increases. so the possibility of seeing a red moon increases as u go near the cities. The most significant red moon ever recorded in the history ever was caused from the explosion of 'krakatoa', a volcano in the Indonesian archipelago. the moon appeared red for over a month.

We all have heard of the phrase the Dark side of the Moon. Plain and simple, no light from the sun. Solar winds and flares, which release radiation and gamma rays, are deflected by the Earths atmosphere. Our atmosphere also acts as a filter, giving our sky a certain haze at any given time.

So, with solar winds and flares deflected and filtered. and the suns light upon the moon, we can have an array of colors. Most commonly reddish and orange.

I don't know about the biblical aspects of the Blood-red moon.

When I was in Southern Oregon during the forest fires, the moon was blood red. All the smoke in the air made the moon look bright red. I've actually seen this a couple times in my life.

You will notice the color usually the most noticeable when closest to the horizon, because you are looking through the greatest length of earth's atmosphere, and the more pollution, such as forest fire smoke or volcanic ash, the redder the moon or for that matter the sunset, and yes, nuclear fallout would but I think we'd have other more immediate indicators, check out KI4U dot com for more info.

In the book of Ace (in the bible) it says that the savior will come when the sun is black and the moon is blood, that means then that The Savior will come when the moon is red such as a nuclear missile hits or volcano errupts everywhere, and that when the moon eclipses with the sun because that is when the sun is black, Be prepared!!

rumors say Apollo carried white paint to write COKE on it

the more realistic answer is that it turns into a brownish red color if it enters the shadow of the earth. in this case the light from the sun on the moon is modified by the atmosphere
how the moon looks is depending whats in your line of sight to the moon. if there's smoke or dust in the air the moon could look red

To put it simply, the moon will look red when it is shining through smoke, smog or dust. Sometimes there will be two full moons in one month. The second one will be called a blue moon. Don't ask me why.
