Why do you think Tom Hanks (Chuck Nolan) was driving around with a volleyball in his front seat. I like to think that it was a way to honour or stay connected to his lost "friend"...who of course wasn't real, and just his own imagination, but it kept him alive, and it was very real to him....and wow I cried when he lost him...but I digress...

It may be sort of a way to connect with Wilson but also maybe he keeps it around just in case something like that happens again. That is a great movie. It kind of helped me get over a girl (I know it's corny). But tomorrows another day, and you never know what the tide will bring in...something like that

He was replacing packages he has to use. He had memorized the addresses from the Fed Ex packages with his 4 year stay and was travelling around the country to thank the people that these little packages helped him survive. He was returning the artist's package after and he had probably returned the ice skates, etc, already. The volleyball was going to the little boy for his birthday from his Grandpa. The artist being single and cute was just a sign to his life ahead.

It was a basketball and he named it Wilson. I think the ball represented sanity in the movie, it was the only constant in his life on that island. When he gets back home everything and one he loved had moved on.I cried too.

He opened those packages. they helped him stay alive. but he was not spose to. if he was not on a deserted island he would have gotten in trouble for opening them. he figured these people didnt get there packages so he was doing his doing job by givingthem new items. if you look closer he had skates and other things also.
