G'day Skilledout3,

Thank you for your question.

They formed alliances for both offensive and defensive reasons. They wanted to have military support for possible claims of the land of other countries and for protection against enemies.

I have attached sources for your reference.

Seasons regards

On the basis that my enemy's enemy is my friend. So, in the 16th and 17th centuries, by and large, the protestant powers would form alliances against the catholic. In the late 18th and early 19th century alliances were formed against Napoleon - so Blucher from Prussia came rushing to the aid of Wellington at Waterloo. Later in the 19th century on economic and nationalistic grounds - the Zollverein amongst the states of Germany, the alliances between the states of Italy prior to unification. Later it was a power thing. Great Britain became alarmed at the rise of Germany as a world power and entered into first the Entente Cordiale with France, then the alliance was widened to include Russia. For its part Germany entered into alliances against this bloc with Austro-Hungary and Turkey. In more recent years the alliance which has become the EU was entered into first as a purely economic entity - the European Coal and Steel Community, then as a wider, more political grouping, as much anything to ensure a large internal Free market for goods and services against the economic might of the USA.
