intermittent strong odor all the way to first floor; seemingly NOT assocaited with CO/oil leak. Where else can I look/how can I be sure I a safe?

make sure ur co detector is mounted close to the floor, co is heavy and sinks to the floor. Check ur ventilation, the exhaust for the furnace could be the trouble. Breaks in the seams on any stovepipe venitlation, maybe santa is stuck in the chimney? If so, get a broom and w/ the bussiness end aim for his nethers, give him a firm goose and he should fly right out.

Sounds like your air intake is not right. or you have some sorry oil
