As in, you make two columns, but I seem to only be able to write on the left said. What gives?

It is all still one big block of text. To write in the next column, you need to fill up the first column, either with text or a bunch of enters. Or you can go to INSERT --> BREAK --> COLUMN BREAK.

Hope that helps.

You either have to full the first column, and then it continues in the second, or you have to click Insert and insert a Column Break at the bottom of the text in the first column. Then you can type in the second column.

Try using a table. if you are using Word 2003 go to Table --> Insert --> Table

then you can choose 2 columns and format it the way you want.
