You should have a cap on your chimney so that rain and snow don't come down into your fireplace. I don't know much else about chimneys, sorry.

If there is a crack on the section you can see, you may want an expert to come out and inspect the entire flue. If it has serious cracks, it can be a fire hazard. I like screens on the chimney. I've had birds and even a duck get stuck in the chimney. It also keeps the raccoons out.

If you have a cracked flue the best solution and safest for you is to contact a qualified chimney mason and have him come and inspect the chimney. Based on his evaluation and advice I would go with his suggestion. Even though it may be expensive, it's much cheaper than a house fire. Good luck!!!

Chimneys are dangerous. Yes, you do need a chimney hood. And also, any cracks are a big problem. You should have your chimney repaired and inspected before using it.

you need a cover but you also need to fix the crack before you use it cause it can cause a fire & no danger if you fix it but like i said if you dont fix the chute then your asking for trouble cause it can cause a chimney fire & you will be out of a home for christmas good luck
