I am wanting to put in allergin removing filters but I don't know if I need to buy something other than the filter I put in the wall...I think that's called the return air vent.

Norm hit the nail right on the head.... I'm an HVAC tech in Minnesota, and if you live in this fine state, a heat pump is not the way to go... you will only be able to use the heat part in late fall, and late winter.... when it starts to get down to 10 degrees for a high.... you'll be freezing, because the heat pump won't be working. I suggest you install a gas furnace... If you can afford the extra money... I would go with a 2 stage.... most of them are 96% efficient, and they are pretty nice units... Depending on when you plan to put it in... sometime in the spring there is 2 brands of central airs, that I know of that are coming out with a 23 SEER air conditioner, that should be a energy efficient machine. Good Luck

I too have electric AC w/ a gas furnace in a central heating / cooling situation. It's all one large unit containing both a furnace and cooling coils in my attic, and both run on the same thermostat. I have three return air ducts which require filters. These ducts supply the return air which both the AC and the furnace use. Those ducts must have filters. You want to filter the return air that your system (both heating and cooling) uses. If both heating & cooling systems use the same air ducts (and they probably do), then you don't have separate filter systems.

It has one filter. Spend a little more on your filters and they'll save you a lot of dirt in your home, and save your heating system also. I usually get filters that are about $5 each.

It all depends on the kind you have. Call someone that deals with your type of heater and air conditioner. Make sure you have the model and serial numbers with you. Mine only had one filter.....Flo P.S. or look in the manuals
