It's significant that football fans have to ask that question. Nobody can tell what a team has done in a game by looking at the final score. You have to wait, overnight, while pollsters assemble subjective opinions. As rule-crazy as the NFL is, at least you know which teams made the playoffs by whether they won their games. The mathematical aura of the BCS is misleading, listing the scores out to four decimal places, trying to put a coat of rationality on a subjective system that does not work as advertised.

jebudas linked to a good site.

The problem with people is they're biased. They will always assume Notre Dame is better than another school with the same record, for example. The problem with computers is they are programmed by people who are biased. For example, what is the most blatant example, the Sagarin's poll has 9 of the top 10 strength of schedules in the PAC 10.

There are 1000's of "if's" in that, yet what might you think of approximately this "if"? What "if" Tennessee wins out, loses to LSU in the convention championship, Kansas beats Mizz, Oklahoma beats Kansas, WV loses to Conn., and Georgia jumps Ohio State after a Georgia Tech blowout. What do you have then? LSU v. Georgia for the nationwide identify. long shot for effective, yet a threat. And have not we seen stranger happenings this season? BTW, my "if's" have been based on the undeniable fact that Georgia is ranked 6th in the AP. however the only different "if" i p.c. is the USC beating Arizona St. "if".

Three portions:

1. Coaches poll - percentage of points received vs. total possible (each voter's poll give 25 for first, 24 for second, etc.)
2. Harris poll - percentage of points received vs. total possible
3. Computer poll - percentage of possible positions, with lowest of six polls for each team thrown out.

Average of the three numbers is the rating.
