Firewire is a cable used to connect digital media devices such as video cameras and sometimes hard drives. Ethernet is used to connect a computer to the internet... things like a router or modem. They're meant for two separate things.

Ethernet is a protocol (language) that multiple computer use to talk to each other over a network or the Internet.

They are two different concepts. Ethernet is related to connecting computers together so they can create networks and talk to eachother. Firewire is about connecting devices such as camcorders to computers so they can transfer data to eachother.
