I think a better and more fair question would be why is Detroit such a poor city? Many decades of local government corruption coupled with the expanding social segregation of the two predominant races have placed the actual city of Detroit as one of the poorest and most violent cities, whereas the suburban areas are some of the cleanest, richest, and safest places to live in the entire country. In recent years, the plight of the city has only increased due to manufacturing job losses in the automotive industry, but even with this challenge, there are signs of urban renewal are present. With the Super Bowl and the Tigers World Series run, the downtown district showed that there is plenty of opportunity for improvement and the chance to make this one of best places to live. I have found from most of my travels around the country that people who think Detroit is just a miserable, violent, and depressing city have never actually been here, but I would encourage anyone to reserve judgement and see for themselves.

Don't forget the 50% drop out rate for high school. I'm a suburbanite and a drive through the "bad" parts rarely and they look a ghost town of urban blight. Last time it was summer time and a graduation party was going on at the single non condemned home on the block ( both sides) and I could not imagine having to live in that neighborhood. It will never make a comeback until somehow they get people with money to move back to the city. Its true that it is the the most segregated city in the usa but blacks are moving out at an high rate also, bottom line anyone with the means to leave does, leaving no tax base of the city. The city proper is a crummy city but the suburbs are very nice, the weather sucks but it a very nice place to be in the summer.

Highlights err low lights of Detroit:
7% unemployment rate
Dis functional leadership (both the Mayor & City Council)
26% high school graduation rate
Zero tax base from low income residents to support the city infrastructure
Soaring crime rates while Police department budget has been decimated
Infant mortality rate in parts of Detroit is less than or equal to some 3rd world nations
High drug use & gang activity
....the list of reasons can go on and on.
It is a sad tragedy. Detroit was once a very live and vibrant city.

Oh Please I Live In Detroit And Iam White. All You Who Said Somthing About "Black" people, are straight racist. Yes I Will admit that detroit is violent in some areas but Black people are not the problem. It's people like you racists make the colored feel liek their not important so they slack off and do drugs. Yeah well its not them who need to learn a lesson, its you. And its a little thing I'd like to call RESPECT. Some parts the hidden, ally parts, yes you can get shot by a man or woman. You'd have to worry everyday of not getting shot. But theyve changed now. The crime rate has gone way down and do you know how many people have gone out of jail and not done a crime for years? Well if you don't I do. Its 3492 people. Thats Like 2000 jail cells empty. And there is just as much chance for you getting shot in a local town and in Detroit. Someone could bring a gun to school in small towns and In detroit. You can die in a small town and die in Detroit. Not many differences. Besides Detroit is not the worst try St. Louis or Minneapolis Or maybe even St. Paul. I love Detroit and I'll probably never move.

Actually...to let ya know, Detroit is the second most violent city in the US after St Louis and sad to say, Flint Michigan is in third...i think we can all thank granholm and her lack of jobs...if ppl could make a decent living...most of them would...but if the jobs arent there they are gonna turn to crime and drugs to make a living...its pretty sad...i live in a small town in northern michigan and the crime is getting worse on a daily basis...if i didnt love the state the how beautiful it was...i would move out of it...the unemployment rates are sky high!!

It was something called "White Flight".
White flight is a colloquial term for the demographic trend of upper and middle class Americans (predominantly white) moving away from inner cities (predominantly non-white), finding new homes in nearby suburbs or even moving to new locales entirely.
In the 1950s the white population of Detroit declined by 23%. Correspondingly, the percentage of non-whites rose from 16.1% to 29.1%. In sheer numbers the black population of Detroit increased from 303,000 to 487,000 during that decade. When the white families moved out to the suburbs, they left behind whole areas that didn't have funding (because of a loss of property taxes) and created chaos.
Tax problems, vacant buildings, and a large gang/drug problem still deters people from moving back to Detroit. The problem perpetuates

Lack of jobs, drugs, drugs and more drugs. Bad neighborhoods, sense of hopelessness, overworked police, overcrowded jails, huge dockets in the courts.
