Your friend is mistaken about the costs of domestic help. Cleaning companies in my city charge $20.00/hour and upwards. The idea of cleaning someone elses mess means that they get to be well compensated for it.

$20 an hour isnt too much to charge. If the person works alone, then they might be responsible for buying products, and equipment. What if something breaks in the home? Would they have to replace the object? Also, they have to provide their own health insurance and any other insurance that they want. They probably also have to pay for gas and vehilcle maintenance. I currently clean houses and I have to fill up at least three times a week and go through an oil change every three months. When you take out those expenses, they probably make about $10 an hour for their take home pay. If they clean on their own then they might also have a phone bill that is heftier than most so they can call customers.

In my neck of the woods, they figure the cost by the square footage, not by the hour. In a 1600 or less sq foot home, most charge $40-60 per cleaning, which includes sweeping, mopping, vac, both bathrooms, dusting the house. If they want more done, (windows, dusting fans & baseboards, etc, it's considered more of a 'spring cleaning' and costs more) For a 2000+ sq foot home, the cost runs from $60-85 per cleaning job.
The total cost you made depended on how long it actually took you. I used to help a friend, and by the time she and I split the cost, it just wasn't worth it when you consider the gas and mileage, and back breaking work. Not many places figure the cost like we do here in our parishes, but it does help the consumer to know the exact cost off the bat instead of an estimate.

Well, I had a 4 bedroom house (on the smaller side), on Long Island and I paid $80 a week. I think $20 per hour is appropriate, but it depends upon where you are cleaning the house and how big it is. I cleaned houses for a bit in college and always gave a high ball rate and then negotiated. You can work it out with the homeowners.

I am an unemployed and partly disabled man on Social Security Benefits in New South Wales Australia and only recieve approximately$220-per week and I would be happy to pay $20-per hour for such a service,I don't think your friend would make any money in any sort of business-The adverage cost of a cleaner here is about $27.50 per hour which I still think is a fair deal for the service provided. Good Luck in the Future.

I'm in South Florida and i pay $60. If my cleaning person takes 3 or 4 hours that's up to her. She was $50 but with the price of gas going sky high and she drives up from Miami to Boynton Beach I increased her to $60 on my own. She's well worth it and very nice.

$20 an hour is reasonable if you are good and quick. Would your friend do it for $10? If so you charge the customer $20 and then pay your friend $10 to do the work.

I don't think $20 an hour is unreasonable. A person is paying for the convenience of having someone else do their work. I would pay someone else $20 an hour to clean my house.

Do you have liability insurance? Do you post a bond?
A professional cleaning company does these things, and charges much more than $10 per hour.
