Most people know the King cheated on his wife and family, he was a well known womanizer, why is this ugly thing he did not talked about. I think it's shameful he did these things. King never passed one single law.
Why do some say he's some kind of great man...I don't get it???

Is this an attempt to sweep the facts under the rug?

The simple fact that he cheated on his wife and children say's the truth about this man. Why on earth would we have a holiday for someone who is a liar and a cheat. Should we hold him up as some example on mankind..I think not

And I understand that Jessie Jackson used to spit in white peoples food when he worked in the food industry.
But MLK was a great leader, he helped the black civil rights movement actually get rights for people, too many have taken credit for what he did.
He organised and lead the civil rights movement.
Anyone should honor and respect him for his ideas of equal rights, ( not better or more) but equal.
His wife was a wonderful lady, I got to know her. I walked the same streets that MLK walked, I ate at the places he ate, and got my hair cut where he got his hair cut.
The 1000's of great things, over come the personal faults.

Well people say he was a great man because he did some great things. The fact that he was flawed doesn't wipe out the good that he did. And, as we all should have learned, a couple's sex problems should be handled within their own family.

He was not really a great man in any true sense of the word, but he was the only major black leader that wanted change through peaceful means instead of by riots and murder and rebellion, so the white government, afraid of a revolting, violent, and rioting black population, put King high on a pedestal in hopes that most blacks would follow his example!

The Man as a hole was great. Think if your whole life your where keep down by the man, would you want to be preaching peaceful protest? I don't know about you, but I would of joined the black panthers and adopt any means necessary. If he wasn't assianated he would of been the first black president.

Just because he cheated on his wife doesn't mean that the other things he was working on were bad.
He got the nation to look at how they were treating African-Americans. We were treated like second class citizens. Men and women were hung, killed and sent to jail for the things that we take for granted. Dr. King was a face for a nameless millions.
Beside look at other men who cheated on their wife's that are hero's.......JFK?

I would bet that you are either over 30 or your parents are nearing 70.
I am and mine are.
Where our parents were at the time probably marks a contrast in how he is remembered.
My parents were in LA and were dealing with something entirely different in the "civil rights" struggle.
He didn't come to be appreciated until later, and by that time, those facts were ill-mannered, because he was dead.

I never knew he did that stuff. If it's true then that is very sad. People say he was a great man because of his politcal views and how he tried to lead the people to a peaceful co-existence with each other, not because of his personal life.

I've also heard he had ties to American communist parties and that he was on some FBI watch-list. Not sure if these claims are true but I wouldn't be surprised....
He's certainly not alone however with regards to American "heroes" having questionable pasts....

I am FAR from liberal.
But, frankly, why does it matter? If we can't acknowledge the good done by someone who had failings that leaves us with only ONE man to talk about! I love Jesus as much as the next American, but I don't want him to be my soel conversation topic.

So by your logic, you would hold a faithfully married klansman in higher esteem than MLK?
I think you have some racial issues going on in your life.
