The quote, to me, is a contradiction on some levels. Very often our "Emotions" do just the opposite with regard to "forward"

Certainly as a species we are often ruled by and guided by our emotions, no matter their origin or strength, but as I said they often restrict us, and insist doubt, anxiety, and stagnation, into our lives.

Also, emotion, as strictly defined isn't always morally upright, or beneficial, saintly, or Noble.

A key might be in knowing what emotions we do experience, how they affect us, through introspection and analasys, and equating what we feel, to any effect and affect that may transfer to others.

I think emotions can propel us forward, emotions always have. I don't necessarily mean "oh, I'm so sad I can't get off of my couch" emotions, I mean "I'm so passionate about this, I will protest, fight, campaign, and do anything else to see this happen or not happen" emotions drive us to make almost every decision in our lives, and often our emotions are more correct than our logic. Our brain often tells us what others want us to do, but our emotions can only tell us what WE want.

I think without the context it is flawed. If you get too emotionally involved you won't be going forward, if forward indicates a form of progression ;)

To me it means that when we get emotionally attached, we care. So when we care, we want. When we want, we try.

And when we try we have a chance at success.
