In the past, meaning before expansion began in 1961, there were sixteen teams, eight in the American League, and eight in the National League. The original sixteen teams were: American League: Oakland (then Philadelphia) Athletics, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Washington Senators, St. Louis Browns, New York Yankees, and Boston Red Sox. National League: Los Angeles (Brooklyn until 1958) Dodgers, San Francisco (New York until 1958) Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta (then Boston, then Milwaukee) Braves, and the Philadelphia Phillies. Since then, 14 teams have entered the leagues through expansion, and some feel the level of play is now diluted. There are 14 teams in the American League, and 16 teams in the National League, the reason being that if the 30 teams were divided equally into 15, one team in each league would never play anybody on a given day. However, the thirty teams, as they are recognized today are:
American League
AL West Division
Oakland Athletics
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
Seattle Mariners
Texas Rangers
AL Central Division
Minnesota Twins
Chicago White Sox
Detroit Tigers
Cleveland Indians
Kansas City Royals
AL East Division
New York Yankees
Boston Red Sox
Baltimore Orioles
Toronto Blue Jays
Tampa Bay Devil Rays
National League
NL West Division
Los Angeles Dodgers
San Francisco Giants
San Diego Padres
Colorado Rockies
Arizona Diamondbacks
NL Central Division
St. Louis Cardinals
Chicago Cubs
Cincinnati Reds
Pittsburgh Pirates
Milwaukee Brewers
Houston Astros
NL East Division
New York Mets
Atlanta Braves
Florida Marlins
Philadelphia Phillies
Washington Nationals

They are 30 teams in Major League Baseball. It's too bad though that only a handful of those teams have the money to but all of the free agents this winter.

there are trillions of teams in the sport of baseball, but i'm assuming that you mean in the MLB. there are 16 teams in the national league, and 14 in the american league. the national league and the american league are the two leagues in the MLB (major league baseball).
